ABOUT VANUATU - TRANSPORT & COMMUNICATION
International connections exist with Auckland, Brisbane, Melbourne, Sydney, Noumea and Nadi.
Air Caledonie flies in from Noumea (New Caledonia) with connections from Australia, New Zealand and Tahiti. Air Pacific flies from Nadi (Fiji Islands) with connections from New Zealand, Japan and the USA and Solomon Airlines flies from Honiara (Solomon Islands) and Port Moresby (PNG).
Domestic airline Vanair services all major islands in the country at least once or twice a week.
Transport between islands is best done by plane as inter-island boats taking deck passengers are irregular. Vanair provides regular services, if not every day, to the larger islands.
Most roads are on the perimeter of the islands. There are 1070 kilometres of roads, of which about 25% are paved. Cars, 4WDs and jeeps are available for hire on the larger, more populated islands. Taxis are plentiful in larger towns and mini buses offer a frequent though unscheduled service. To get from place to place on the coast, or between larger islands and their small offshore islands, boats are more common.
